The Archbishop acknowledges a Womans Right to Choose

The Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis finally acknowledges that women have the right to choose to have an abortion, or at least it started out that way. In his most recent article in the Catholic Spirit (Oct. 13, 2011), Archbishop Nienstedt talks about a real story about one woman’s “choice” to give her child up for an adoption rather than have an abortion. His initial emphasis is on her “choice” rather than chastising her for even thinking about an abortion. Nice going your most worhipfulness, if you would have left it at that.
Now of course the Archbishop couldn’t leave it there; a nice little story about a woman’s right to choose. No, he had to escalate the whole article and pull out all the stops. He had to chastise the media, throw in the Hispanic aspect into abortions and contraceptives, and mention the fact that October is also “Bullying Awareness Month.” I am sure if he had the print space to spare he would have also mentioned the fact that October is also All American Breakfast month as well as Mom & Apple Pie month if it would help his case. (But let’s be fair here, this savvy internet traveler also wants it noted that it’s also Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual History Month, as well as Hug a Texas Chef Month).
Oh well, at least he acknowledged the fact that a woman somewhere had the right to choose. Now, if he would just take the time to extrapolate that to a more general case for women we’d be in business… Maybe not. I shouldn’t expect too much all at once, but there's at least some hope for the Archbishop.
